What the Appeals Council can do
- Deny the request for review: the judge's decision stands and you can go to federal court.
- Grant review and issue its own decision.
- Grant review and send the case back (remand) to an administrative law judge.
- Dismiss the request, for example if it was filed late without good cause.

After the Appeals Council
If the Council denies review or decides against you, you have 60 days to file a civil action in the U.S. District Court for your area. There is no SSA form for this step.

Can I send new evidence?
Yes, but only if the evidence is new, material, relates to the period on or before the date of the judge's decision, and there is a reasonable probability it would change the outcome. You must also show good cause for not submitting it at least 5 business days before the hearing, for example if SSA's action misled you, a physical, mental, educational or linguistic limitation prevented you, or an unusual circumstance beyond your control.
