Online video hearing (Microsoft Teams)
- An email address to receive the meeting link.
- A computer, laptop or smartphone with camera, microphone and speakers.
- A high-speed internet or Wi-Fi data connection.
- A quiet, private space.
After you request a hearing, SSA sends a Notice of Ways to Attend a Hearing with form HA-56. Return it as the notice explains. Requesting the hearing online is not the same as agreeing to an online video hearing.
Phone hearing
A phone hearing is audio only. The hearing office calls you at the scheduled time. Keep your file, medication list and notes nearby, and use a place where you will not be interrupted.
Changing the format
Call or write to the hearing office handling your case as soon as possible. Waiving your right to appear in person entirely is a different thing, done with form HA-4608.

Is a phone hearing less likely to be approved?
SSA does not publish approval rates by hearing format. The judge applies the same rules in every format.
