- Find your local office and its direct phone number in the office directory.
- Call the office or SSA's national number, 1-800-772-1213, and ask for an appointment. Agents answer 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. local time, Monday to Friday.
- Write down the date, time and office address, and gather original documents before you go.
When to call
SSA says wait times to speak to a representative are typically shorter in the morning, later in the week and later in the month. Automated phone services are available 24 hours a day.
What to bring
- Original documents or copies certified by the issuing agency; SSA cannot accept photocopies or notarized copies.
- Photo identification, such as a driver's license, state ID or U.S. passport.
- Any letters SSA sent you about your case.
